Being a Commonwealth Citizen

A responsible Commonwealth citizen is someone who:

Simply by living in one of the countries of the Commonwealth, we are Commonwealth citizens. We can be passive citizens or active ones. Responsible Commonwealth citizens can participate in the making of decisions that affect them, and can play a part in activities that make a positive difference, whether locally, nationally or throughout the Commonwealth.

Young Commonwealth citizens can make a difference in their own communities, acting as a model and inspiration to others across the world.

Becoming informed Commonwealth citizens
In the 21st century, technological advances allow easy and rapid contact between Commonwealth nations across the world. Television, the Internet and the World Wide Web allow information to spread faster than ever before, bringing global ideas and concerns into our schools and homes, but it's important to remember that traditional forms of communication still have their place and can be essential to remote communities.

There has always been a gap between those people and communities who have access to information technology and those who do not, but there are many signs that the developing world is catching up. Improvements in communication allow us to be informed about the difficulties and the successes of other countries. We can speak out ourselves and learn from others. With our increased understanding, we have the information necessary to become committed and active citizens of the Commonwealth, harnessing the power of communication in a positive way.
